Acne is a common skin condition typically effecting teenagers and young adults. Acne is usually caused by an increase in androgens, which occurs during puberty. Glands in the skin produce excessive amounts of an oily substance called sebum. Acne develops as a result of blockages of this sebum in the follicles. These clogged pores result in blackheads or whiteheads which are often mild but can get infected by bacteria resulting in pus-filled pustules and cysts. The body reacts causing redness and inflammation, which we associate with Acne; these can be severe and long lasting and in many cases cause bad acne scarring or hyper-pigmentation on the skins surface.
