After graduating at Wits University in 1980, Dr Retief started practising as a General Practitioner in Johannesburg. In 1987 he added a post graduate diploma in Occupational Health and started consulting to various industries, including Premier Milling and SA Breweries. In 1989 he took up a full time post at Tongaat Hulett working as the resident onsite doctor and occupational health consultant at their Amatikulu Sugar mill on the north coast of Kwazulu Natal.
1993 saw his return to Gauteng, where he embarked on creating a Wellness & Quality Ageing practice in Johannesburg. Concurrent to this Dr Retief’s developed a special interest in Sclerotherapy – the treatment of unsightly surface veins. Over the last 18 years this has become a speciality of his practice. Extensive study and training in both Sclerotherapy and Wellness & Quality Ageing have included regular attendance at seminars and fellowships abroad, particularly Europe and the USA.
Dr Retief’s Sclerotherapy work receives referrals from many colleagues including dermatologists, plastic surgeons and aesthetic centres around South Africa. Thus it was a logical move to combine forces with Laserderm to offer a more comprehensive service in the aesthetics field. Sclerotherapy and Laser are seen as the perfect combination of treatments which can assess and treat almost any grade of disfiguring veins anywhere on the human body. Occasionally it is found that surgery is required before the initiation of Laser and/or Sclerotherapy.
