Cryotherapy (Freezing with Liquid Nitrogen)

Also known as cryosurgery, this procedure uses liquid nitrogen which is so cold that when sprayed on to the affected area destroys the tissue. A small scab is left which is gradually replaced by fresh healthy skin. Liquid nitrogen can cause the surrounding skin to blister for a few days. Occasionally cryotherapy can cause hypo-pigmentation (lightening on the skin). This procedure is commonly used to treat solar keratoses.
